John Sterling Yankees’ Legendary Broadcaster Retire
John Sterling will be honored in a ceremony before Saturday’s game in the Bronx against Tampa Bay. The game starts at 1:05 p.m.
Recognizing his surroundings from manager Aaron Boone’s daily press conferences, Sterling leaned into a microphone and quipped: “Is this where Boonie says, ‘I think he’s getting close?’”
“I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years,” Sterling said in a statement. “As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years. It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.”
Boone spoke of Sterling’s kindness and graciousness while calling him “a voice for generations,” noting that he will “be forever connected to the Yankees.”
“It’s like he gets in that chair and it shoots life through him,” Boone said. “He’s at home when he’s in his office. It’s a remarkable career, to be able to do it like that and as long as he did it. He’s left quite a mark on this organization and the game of baseball.”
Sterling was asked if he envisioned watching a Yankees game later in the season and wishing he’d been able to call that action.
“No,” said Sterling. “I’m exhausted. Mel Stottlemyre would say to the pitcher in his last inning, ‘Empty the tank.’ Well, my tank is empty.”
